If you’re a full-time RV-er, you may or may not choose to stay at a campsite each time you stop at your destination. Many full-timers will boondock or “dry camp” at different state parks or even overnight in commercial parking lots. Because this camping style can leave you feeling a little more exposed than a traditional campsite, there are some safety precautions you should keep in mind. Our team at Unlimited RV wants all of our customers to always practice safe camping, so we’ve spelled out a few guidelines that apply to boondockers and campsite goers alike.

RV Safety Tips

Basic Safety Measures

Regardless of where you stay, there are some precautions you can take to make yourself and your RV a bit more safe. Remember that just because you feel at home in your RV doesn’t mean you’re actually at home, so always lock your doors, windows, compartments, and tow car. Pull your curtains closed and don’t leave any electronics or power cords visible through the windows. Finally, pull in your electric step and lock it so it will not go out automatically if the door is opened.

How to Deal with Strangers

We all love meeting friends on the road, it’s half the fun of RV-ing. But let’s face it, some people can make you feel uncomfortable. Never open the door to a stranger; if someone knocks at your door, speak to them through a sliding window instead. If they ask for help (gas/food/shelter/car repairs), offer to call the police for them to ask for a local service that can provide help. Finally, don’t hesitate to call the non-emergency police phone number and ask if the area you’re staying in has any potential for or history of problems. This is especially helpful if you’re staying in a rest area or commercial parking lot for the night.

Don’t Park at Night

If you’re in a hurry to get to your destination, it can be tempting to drive as long as you can into the night and then pick a random parking lot to stay in for the night. However, it is much easier to judge the area by daylight. You’re much more likely to spot problems in an area and you can always choose to keep driving if the area makes you uncomfortable in any way.
